Mr. Rivera is one of three Law Enforcement Instructors at The Center for Career and Technology (CCTE) and has been teaching here since 2017. Upon graduating from Austin High School in 1984 he continued his education at El Paso Community College (EPCC) and went on to earn his Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Park University. In 1987 Mr. Rivera entered the police academy and upon graduation from the academy was assigned to the Northeast Regional Command Center. Mr. Rivera worked in various units within the police department such as Patrol, N.E. Gang Unit, Freeway Traffic Unit, and Motorcycle Traffic Unit. In 1998 he was promoted to Sergeant where he supervised patrol officers at the Northeast Police Station. In 2000 until 2010 Mr. Rivera was a Sergeant in the Crime Scene Unit also known as Forensics. In 2010, Mr. Rivera was assigned to the Crimes Against Persons Unit (CAP) where he was one of the three Sergeants, who supervised cases such as Homicides, Aggravated Robberies, Sexual Assaults, Kidnappings, Aggravated Assaults, Missing Persons and Officer Involved Shootings. Mr. Rivera had a secondary assignment as a Crisis Negotiator and Supervisor of the Crisis Management Team, also known as the Hostage Negotiations Team, from 1996 until 2013. Mr. Rivera retired in 2017 after serving 30 years with the Police Department.
